About the Firm

Bourke Legal opened its doors on 1 July 2021. Director Brendan Bourke has been a partner in Stone & Partners (1996 – 2005), Bourke Love McCartney Young (2005 – 2009) and Bourke Love (2009 – 2021). Fellow Director Pania Watt has been working with Brendan since 2004.

We have offices in Ballina and Kingscliff (2 lawyers in each), 1 lawyer who works remotely full-time and 8 full-time or part-time support staff.

About the Role

The role will involve personal injury work, predominantly NSW workers compensation litigation. You will work in a supportive team environment working closely with everyone within our 12 person team. If any of your school reports said “does not play well with others” please consider applying to a different firm.

To be considered for this role, you must have a minimum of 2 years of post-admission experience, preferably in PI. Being an Approved Lawyer with IRO will be highly regarded.

As an associate in our firm you will be given training, support and mentorship to develop your skills in:

  • client engagement and management;
  • appearing before Commissions Courts and Tribunals;
  • drafting evidentiary statements to meet the expectations of the client, the Court and the case;
  • how to find Experts, how to brief Experts, how to liaise with Experts and how to ensure that Expert Reports are on point, admissible and relevant;
  • drafting and preparing your own pleadings – if you don’t understand your own case, no one else will – and of course the opportunity to review those pleadings with your Supervising Partner and Counsel;
  • Providing focused and pragmatic solutions to address the needs of individual clients.
About you

To be a successful candidate, you will need to have:

  • Experience in Personal Injury litigation in NSW, particularly within the Workers Compensation Commission and the Personal Injury Commission:
  • Experience and confidence in working with and assisting senior lawyers (both in written and verbal communications), including an ability to draft clear and precise letters, reports, statements and communication;
  • Interpersonal skills, ability to work as part of a team, as well as an ability to build relationships and trust with clients;
  • The ability to identify and consider the key issues that always arise within Personal Injury litigation, and to assess and articulate legal risks (including likelihood and impact) so the client can make informed, risk-based decisions; and
  • Prioritise tasks and manage workflow expectations in line with business requirements.
